What is Oya Temple? Discover Its Unique Charm

Oya Temple, or Ōya-ji (大谷寺), is a historic Buddhist temple located in the scenic Oya Valley near Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Believed to have been founded in the early 9th century by the monk Kūkai, this temple is carved directly into the soft volcanic rock of the surrounding cliffs. The main hall, partially set in a natural cave, creates a mystical and serene atmosphere, making it a rare and striking example of rock-cut architecture in Japan.

One of the most unique features of Oya Temple is the ancient stone statue of the Buddhist deity Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Kannon), which is believed to be the oldest of its kind in Japan. The temple is also located near the famous Oya Stone Museum, adding to its appeal for visitors interested in history and geology. Surrounded by lush nature and mysterious rock formations, Oya Temple offers a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into Japan’s spiritual and artistic heritage.
